Massive Survey Indicates Widely Different Media Use among Kids

So on this Thanksgiving, we thought we would give you a little data to chew on along with the turkey.

A major new survey from Common Sense Media was released earlier this month and it raises some interesting questions about media use among American kids. The survey found that media use can be radically different among kids based on their race, class and gender and that income gaps can greatly alter the amount and quality of media kids consume.

“The census really sheds light on how different media use is for different kids – from boys to girls, low income to more affluent, and kids from all ethnic backgrounds,”James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, said in a release. “There are a lot of ways media use can be educational and beneficial for our kids, from learning apps and web sites to creating content. The media use census provides parents, educators and the media industry with an excellent overview of what kids are doing today and how we can make the most of the media and technology in their lives.”

The full report can be found here, but they also produced this very nice infographic that captures some of the data they have collected.
