Hunting the Great White (Young & Male) Whales of Mobile Gaming

There is some research out there about who are that small percentage of gamers who make most of the in-app purchases that drive the freemium game market. One survey from the video game market research firm Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) found that most of those sought-after big spenders are young men who also play console games.

EEDAR described these players as “the whales” of the mobile gaming world and said that although the mobile gaming users skewed female 66 percent of the top 5 percent of those who spent money on games were men.

“Unsurprisingly, whales spent more time playing mobile games than non-whales, but they also played more games of all types,” the report found. “While non-payers’ gaming total was limited to 7.2 hours a week and even payers only registered 9.9 hours, whales reported an average of 26.5 hours of time spent gaming each week, nearly one quarter of their waking time (assuming eight hours of sleep each day).”

Some of the research is captured in this pretty helpful infographic.
